History
The Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology, the then ‘Bengal Ceramic Institute’ was established on the 3rd of April, 1941 with a view to impart education in Ceramic Technology along with hands-on training on traditional potteries and other conventional Ceramic products in the college itself. The primary objective for that period was to provide a skill to large number of displaced persons from the then East Bengal so that they can make a living out of it. B.Sc. (Tech.) degree course in Ceramic Technology under the University of Calcutta was introduced in the year 1962. Subsequently the institute was transformed to multidisciplinary from mono disciplinary with the introduction of Information Technology and Computer Science &Engineering department. The higher education department, Government of West Bengal, then changed the name of the college from ‘College of Ceramic Technology’ to its present name “Government college of Engineering and Ceramic Technology”. . The affiliation of the college also changed from the University of Calcutta to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology formerly known as West Bengal University of Technology in 2001.
The seed of this institution was sown with humble ambition. Now, It not only boasts of its pristine glorious past as a training cum educational institute but also its golden harvests i.e., former students, who shone as the dynamic exponents of Ceramics, its research, application and production. The fore-runners laid a strong foundation of this discipline of technology in the country and abroad as well, getting trained in an institution which had been the only full-fledged college offering degree course in Ceramic Technology in the country till its transformation to a multi-disciplinary college. The B.Sc.(Tech.) degree was however rechristened as B. Tech. in Ceramic Technology along with two newly introduced B. Tech. courses in conformity with the accepted standards of nomenclature.
It is worth mentioning that good research activities were already existent in the UG College, which produced quite a good ‘number of Ph.Ds. The M. Tech course in Ceramic Technology was introduced in the year 2006-07. The institute successfully implemented a World Bank assisted TEQIP-I programme where the institute received Rs. 7.36 crore for implementation of various reform measures to upgrade the academic curriculum and resources. Because of which students from different backgrounds are reaping the benefit of higher studies in this institute. Moreover, in the year 2012, the College started M.Tech. program in Information Technology to keep pace with the growing demand of the market. Introduction of M.Tech. programs in Ceramic Technology and Information Technology have enormously increased the possibilities and scopes for research which are evident from the increased number of sponsored projects being granted to the faculties in addition to the trend of faculties and scholars enrolling for PhDs with greater urge.
The Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology is first ever Government Engg. College in West Bengal to receive NAAC accreditation with the status of grade A in 2015.
