LIBRARY AS A LEARNING RESOURCE

1. Introduction:

The college library was started along with the establishment of the College in 1941 in order to cater to the academic and research needs of information. It has a collection of 16,771 books. Currently it has been subscribing 15,763 e-Journals, 31,69,176 e-Books, 8224 video lectures and many e-Magazines, Video lectures, e-Newsletters, Case Reports, e-Newspapers and Conference Proceedings. There is a collection of conventional reference books like dictionary, encyclopaedia, handbook, manual, yearbook etc. for ready reference and general information. The library has special collection for career guidance. The library is a member of N-LIST (National Library and Information Services Infrastructure of Scholarly Content), DELNET (Developing Library Network).

2. Goals of the Library:

  1. To contribute to the realization of the aims of the college with regard to teaching, learning, and research by acquisition of print and non-print materials necessary to cover the present day and future information needs.
  2. To register, store and organize the materials acquired in such a way that it not only permits but also actively stimulates the use of these materials.
  3. To adapt these information resources and services to the changing needs of the college and society.

3. Library Committee:

The library committee members discuss regularly about various policies and procedures for the betterment and development of the library. The Library Committee has been actively taking innovative decisions keeping track with the development of science and technology to fulfill the ‘Five Laws of Library Science’ as was enunciated by Dr. S.R. Ranganathan  i.e.

  1. Books are for use,
  2. Every Books its user,
  3. Every user its book,
  4. Save the time of the user and
  5. Library is a growing organism

Library gets feedback regularly from the users. The Library Committee frequently meets and the issues are discussed and appropriate measurements are taken to augment the Library as a citadel of learning resources of the Institute.

  4. Two Students Representatives

4. Significant Initiatives Implemented:

  1. Implementation of RFID Technology which enables library users perform self-issue/ return of books and it also helps in bring down the cases of unintentional book removals from the library.
  2. Subscription of adequate E-Journals and E-Books are being made. Procurement  of 8,224 video lectures on various subjects from IIT-KGP.
  3. Adoption of membership of national network such as N-LIST (National Library and Information Services Infrastructure of Scholarly Content) and DELNET (Developing Library Network)
  4. Modernization of reading room facility with special provisions for differently able students.
  5. Creation of e-corner within the library for online access of e-journals, e-books and other documents as well as remote access of e-resources.
  6. Digitization of library with installation of modernized and latest library management software KOHA which is running in Cloud Platform. This enables users search OPAC from any computer, laptop, mobile having internet connectivity.
  7. Numbers of books for loan have been increased from three to five for a period of one month. Users have the option of changing the books any time.
  8. Special collections of Career guidance and English language have been made. In addition to five textbooks students are allowed to borrow two books on career guidance and English language.
  9. Installation of CCTV surveillance at the entry/exit point and reading room of the library for security of the resources.
  10. Organization of book exhibition.

5. Accessibility:

The library is Open Access which enables the users to browse the books and pick up books as per their choice for loan and reading room.

7. Membership of Library Network:

The college library is a member of NLIST (National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content) and DELNET (developing Library Network).

NLIST is the college component of e-Shodh Sindhu. It provides access to e-resources to students, researchers and faculties through servers installed at the INFLIBNET Centre.

DELNET is a major resource sharing library Network in India connecting more than 7700 institutions in 33 states in India and few other countries. It is located in Jawaharlal Nehru University Campus, New Delhi. The main objectives of DELNET is to promote resource sharing among the Member-Libraries by collecting, storing and disseminating information and by offering networked library services to users.

8. User Education Programme:

Every year at the time of commencement of 1st year classes there is an awareness programme organized by the library regarding accessing e-journals and e-books by different gateways as well as different sources of information viz. documentary sources, institutional sources and human sources available outside the college campus Thereafter regularly user education orientation is provided as and when required to access and optimize the learning resources in a lucid manner. Supplier of e-journals also conducts orientation programme for library users regarding ‘how to search/ download e-journals’

9. Book Acquisition and Processing Systems:

i. Selection procedure:

To meet the information needs of the teachers, students and research scholars, books and non-book materials are being selected by the respective Heads of the Department in consultation with other subject experts of the departments concerned. Student’s demands are considered from the book requisition register in which they put their choice of reading materials for procurement.

ii. Processing Systems:

Collected materials are being processed either by the librarian or through outsourcing depending upon the volume of acquisition. Day to day house keeping operation viz. accessioning, shelving, retrieval, issue, return, restoration, shelf rectification, cataloguing, data entry are being done by the librarian.

Collection of books are examined periodically for the purpose of repair, replacement or removal.

14. NVDA:

There are provisions for Non-visual Desktop Access(NVDA) Software for the differently abled students in the library.

NVDA (NonVisual Desktop Access) is a remarkable assistive technology that empowers differently abled students, particularly blind and vision-impaired individuals, to effectively use the Windows operating system and a wide array of third-party applications. Through NVDA, these students can seamlessly access and interact with popular software, including web browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, email clients, internet chat applications, music players, and essential office programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel. By enabling greater accessibility and independence, NVDA plays a crucial role in enhancing the digital experience for differently abled students with visual impairments.
