On behalf of all faculties and staff, I welcome you heartily to the Government College of Engineering & Ceramic Technology, Kolkata. The Institute (estd. 3rd April,1941) , the then College of Ceramic Technology ( Bengal Ceramic Institute) has been one of the oldest Technological colleges at Kolkata and in the only full–fledged college in India offering ceramic education along with hands –on training on the traditional potteries and other conventional ceramic products in the college itself since its inception.
Starting as a Diploma Institute, it was converted into Degree College under education department of WB Govt. affiliated to the University of Calcutta in the year 1962. Sensing the immense potential of the institution, in the years 2000 and 2001, the W.B. Government introduced IT and CSE disciplines one after another, thus transforming the institution into a multi-disciplinary college affiliated to West –Bengal University of Technology in the year 2001.
The seed of this institution was sown with humble ambition which can not only boast of its pristine glorious past as a training cum education centre initially, but also its former students, Who shone as dynamic exponents of ceramic research application, production and teaching. The fore-runners of this college laid a strong foundation of ceramic technology in the country and abroad as well. IT and CSE courses have also taken good shape with very good track record of placement and higher studies nowadays.
It is worth mentioning that fairly good research activities were already existent in the UG itself. From 2006-07 , students from different background are reaping the benefit of M.Tech courses in ceramic technology and this has enormously increased the possibility and scopes for research in the field & almost all teachers , students and scholars are involved in such activities, not only in ceramic technology , but also in IT & CSE departments of the college. M.Tech course in Information Technology is just at the point of starting its journey after being approved by AICTE. Almost all UG courses and PG course in ceramic Technology are accredited by National board of Accreditation (NBA). GCECT had received a World Bank grant of 7.36 crore under Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme Phase –I and successfully reaped tangible benefits by implementation of various reforms measures as per guidelines resulting into the thorough facelift of the whole college in the recent past.
Historically, Ceramics were mostly exploited for their electrical insulting properties , for which electrical porcelains and aluminas are prime examples. In today’s world , electrical and electronic ceramics play a vital role in any modern technological society. For example, their Insulating properties together with their low –loss factors and excellent thermal and environmental stability make them the materials of choice for substrate materials in electronic packages. The development of the perovskite family with exceedingly large dielectric constants holds a significant market share of capacitors produced. Similarly, the development of magnetic ceramics that are being commercially exploited include piezoelectric ceramic of sensors and actuators, non-linear I-V characteristics for circuit protection , and ionically conducting ceramics for use as solid electrolytes in high-temperature fuel cells and chemical sensors.
These applications don’t even include the superconducting ceramic currently being developed for myriad applications. Mechanical applications of ceramic at room temperature usually exploited hardness, wear and corrosion resistance. The applications include cutting tools, nozzles , valves and ball bearing in the aggressive environments. Mainly, the refractoriness of ceramics and their ability to sustain high loads at high temperature , together with their low densities has created maximum interest in the field. Applications in this area include all ceramic engines for transportation and turbines for energy production with high advantages of lower weight, higher operating temperatures translating to higher efficiencies and less pollution.
Information Technology(IT) has passed through several evolutionary stages, a change which has been determined mainly by the development of scientific and technological progress and the emergence of new technical means of information processing. In the past few decades there has been a revolution in computing and communications and all indications are that technological progress and use of information technology will continue at a rapid pace.
Application of Information Technology range from fields like weather forecasting by meteorologists to biotechnology which is entirely dependent on the use of computers and other microprocessor-controlled devices. Computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) programs have led to improved products in many fields, especially where designs tend to be very detailed. Computer programs make it possible for engineers to analyze designs of complex structures such as power plants and space stations.The advent of Information Technology has changed the meaning of the term “literate”, with computer literacy being almost as important as basic literacy in many cases. Instructional methodology has also undergone a sea change with use of images, animations, videos, presentations and e-learning to complement traditional techniques.The concept of e-governance is one of the most novel applications of Information Technology whereby it is changing the lives of millions across the globe. Newer concepts in medicine like robotic surgery enable specialists to perform surgeries from remote locations. Genomic studies greatly depend on supercomputing power to develop technologies for the future.
There is an inseparable bond among electronics, Computer Sc & Engg, Information Technology and Ceramics which might have initiated the thought of introducing two new departments IT & CSE with a view to facilitating future interdisciplinary research in modern application areas. I believe you, the young technocrats shall utilize the opportunities created and shall enjoy studying at GCECT in the coming years. I wish , all students of all departments get a meaningful education in the truest sense of the term in our college, well-known in the country and aboard.
